Scientific activity
PPANAM axis (Plasma Processes, Nanostructures and Thin Films), DMC research operation (Diamonds and Carbonaceous Materials)
The DMC team has been involved for almost two decades in the study of plasma processes and the synthesis of diamond films by CVD deposition. Reactors optimized for the growth of high-quality, high-purity films have been developed. Today, single-crystal materials with purities down to the ppb level can be produced at tens of µm/h in different crystal orientations. The control of extended defects such as dislocations has also been extensively studied, and growth strategies to reduce their density have been validated. More recently, efforts have been devoted specifically to the growth of diamond doped with NV centers for quantum technologies (sensors, information, etc.). In particular, ultra-pure and isotopically enriched (12C or 13C) layers doped with single NVs or NV ensembles down to densities of a few ppm have been fabricated on different crystal orientations including (100), (111), (110) and (113). Good time coherence properties and preferential orientation of NV centers were demonstrated. Finally, the localization of NV centers in the diamond matrix (both in-plane and at depth) has also been mastered in this laboratory.
